New Orleans, LA. …The film Navigate Her: An Intergenerational Conversation Among African-American Women in New Orleans, premiered at the Joy Theater on June 5, 2014. The film seeks to create a paradigm shifting experience for viewers, as it counters the historically negative stereotypes of African-American women by revealing the realistic experiences of some of the African-American women whom call New Orleans home. The story is crafted in an encyclopedic way as it interlocks the innocent and tender experiences of young children with a certain gravitas of inherent wisdom from the more mature generation.
Navigate Her highlights the contributions of African-American women to the city of New Orleans through a series of short interviews of 31 women representing a cross-section of ages, ranging from age three to the mid to late 60’s age group. Some of the interviewees include President of the Urban League of Greater New Orleans, Erika McConduit-Diggs, Dr. Beverly Wright of Dillard University’s Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, WDSU News Anchor Camille Whitworth, Dr. Margaret Montgomery-Richard, 4th grade students from Lawrence D. Crocker College Prep and a host of other local treasures.
The film explores the lives of the black women featured, through their contributions to the culture and progression of the city of New Orleans. Some of the components of this exploration among the adult cohort are as follows: educational and career trajectories, childhood experiences, adversity/challenges overcome, community work, and transformative experiences/defining moments. The young girls discuss their dreams and aspirations for the future and identify social support systems that keep them encouraged.
Navigate Her is written, curated and executive produced by social worker/public health practitioner Danielle Wright, MPH, MSW. The film is edited and shot by American New Wave Media Group.
